History refuses to be contained or told so neatly.
After a decade of guerilla war, the former members of the Communist Party of Malaysia (CPM) retreated into the South of Thailand in the mid-1950s. Despite their fight for the country’s independence, much was made of the fact that the 10th Regiment party was predominantly Chinese who adopted an atheistic philosophy. This documentary recollects the story of their life in the jungle, the battles and the acupuncture.
Almost everyone in the village is either above the age of 60 or below 15, as the middle generation often had to be sent away as children were an inconvenience in secret guerilla hideouts. The elders are no longer engaged in politics but are farmers and living in exile. Chickens roam freely and life is tranquil in this village where the children will grow up as citizens of another country. The emotional link to their home in Malaysia will soon be lost.
The parallel use of a fictional Thai radio soap opera which is inspired by William Shakespeare’s A Winter’s Tale, functions like a parable telling a story of a king who suspects his wife of adultery and in turn, jails her.
Village People Radio Show is a portrait of village life in South Thailand, home of retired Malay-Muslim members of the Communist Party of Malaya.
